How a Routine Eye Exam Helped Spot a Silent Health Issue

Case Study 01

A 45-year-old client with no prior medical condition came in for a routine eye check-up as he was experiencing blurriness after long hours on the computer.

What We Found
During the eye exam, we took a close look at the back of the eye (the retina) using a special camera. What we saw caught our attention:

We noticed:

  • Fluffy white spots called cotton wool spots
  • A few small retinal hemorrhages (tiny bleeding areas)
  • Some hard exudates (yellowish spots from fluid leakage)
  • Retinal blood vessels looked slightly swollen and twisted

These are signs that the small blood vessels in the eye may be under stress—often related to high blood pressure or early signs of diabetes

Next Steps

  • We tested his blood pressure.
Blood pressure: It was elevated at 243/132.

The Diagnosis
Although the patient came in just for a routine exam, the eye findings pointed to:

  • Early hypertensive retinopathy – changes in the eye caused by high blood pressure
  • And possible early glucose issues (prediabetes)

What Happened Next
We referred the client to his GP doctor for a full health check. They started blood pressure medication and made some lifestyle changes for better blood sugar control.

At their eye follow-up:

  • The retina looked more stable
  • No new bleeding or damage was found
  • Vision remained clear

The Takeaway
Sometimes, your eyes can reveal things about your overall health—even before you feel anything is wrong. A quick, painless eye exam helped this patient catch early signs of high blood pressure and avoid bigger problems down the line.
